Strength-based collective

This tool was designed to help young students with educational disabilities reflect on how they learn, what their strengths are, and what kinds of support help them do their best in school. Developed specifically for post-evaluation use, this map gives students a clear, concrete, and affirming way to process their testing experience and begin building early self-advocacy skills.

Sometimes students don’t fully understand why they were referred for an evaluation or what the process was about. This tool can serve as a gentle, supportive way to close out the evaluation by centering the student’s voice and helping them make sense of their learning journey.

It’s also a valuable resource to share with IEP teams and families, connecting psychoeducational data with student perspectives in a meaningful and practical way.

What’s Inside:

  • A printable student workbook (PDF)
  • A fillable student workbook (type directly into PDF)
  • A facilitation guide with scaffolding tips, example prompts, and common questions

The workbook is broken into six clear, student-centered sections:

  • My Strengths – Students explore their thinking, learning, academic, creative, and social strengths using developmentally appropriate checklists
  • What Feels Tricky for Me? – A space to name school-related challenges and when learning feels harder
  • What Helps Me Do My Best? – Students identify strategies and supports that help them focus, stay regulated, and succeed
  • How Can I Ask for What Helps Me at School? – Gentle prompts to practice advocacy language
  • My Strength-Based Self-Advocacy Plan – A summary that brings their insights together in a way they can refer back to
  • My IEP Goals (What I Want to Work On) – A space for the student to identify goals they’d like to grow toward, connected to the IEP process
